Pro-Palestinian author Rebecca F. Kuang criticized over scene with Israeli musician in ‘Taipei Story

The American author has faced a backlash from her own like-minded supporters. The mention of an Israeli musician in her new book prompted a radical segment of her audience to cancel their pre-orders.

American author Rebecca F. Kuang, the bestselling writer of “Yellowface” and “Babel,” has faced severe criticism from a segment of her online audience. The backlash was sparked by a brief episode in her new novel, “Taipei Story,” featuring a minor character who is an Israeli pianist.

In early May 2026, excerpts from the then-unreleased book surfaced online. In a scene spanning approximately two pages, the protagonist attends a concert by an unnamed pianist from Israel. He is described as a successful musician whose performance makes a strong impression. The character himself has no dialogue and virtually no impact on the plot.

Some users on X, TikTok, and Threads interpreted the mention of an Israeli as the “normalization of Zionism.” Calls emerged to cancel pre-orders and leave low ratings for the book, with some readers actively following through on the cancellations. The influx of negative comments prompted the author to disable replies on her Instagram account.

Rebecca F. Kuang has previously expressed open support for the BDS movement. In December 2025, she withdrew from a literary festival in Dubai, citing an appeal from the Palestinian BDS National Committee. She has also donated special editions of her books to humanitarian fundraisers for Gaza.

Following the book’s release in September 2026, Kuang addressed the controversy. She stated that critics were misinterpreting the scene and emphasized that portraying an Israeli musician does not imply an endorsement of any political positions.

The incident has sparked debate within literary circles. Some observers have characterized the reaction as an example of excessive ideological censorship, where even a neutral mention of a specific country’s citizens becomes grounds for a boycott.
