US and China to Drop Tariffs on $30 Billion in Bilateral Trade

US and China tariffs will drop on $30 billion worth of goods in each direction under a consensus reached within the US-China Commercial and Trade Council. China will lower import duties on American agricultural goods, seafood, timber, cosmetics, and medical devices. The United States will grant preferential tariff treatment to Chinese toys, child safety seats, small household appliances, and holiday decorations.
Beijing also committed to concrete energy import targets over the next two years. The Chinese government agreed to purchase at least 10 million metric tons of US coal annually in 2027 and 2028. This fuel procurement commitment represents one of the most specific commercial clauses finalized during the state visit.
Negotiators failed to resolve standing supply disputes regarding critical minerals and rare earth elements. Both administrations confirmed that technical working groups will continue addressing persistent supply chain bottlenecks. The tariff reduction forms part of an eight-point bilateral consensus that also extends the ongoing trade truce and initiates formal talks on artificial intelligence governance.
Official releases from the White House and the Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs align on fundamental provisions. However, both governments have yet to release complete product schedules and exact implementation dates. Broader strategic rivalries between the two economies remain intact despite the tariff relief.
