Jerusalem Day 2026: The “Yakir Yerushalayim” Award Ceremony Took Place
Jerusalem has officially kicked off its festive events dedicated to Jerusalem Day with one of its most solemn and moving traditions — the ceremony of awarding the title of “Yakir Yerushalayim” (Honorary Citizen of Jerusalem). In 2026, twelve outstanding figures were honored with this prestigious award. The event traditionally took place in a historical complex, highlighting the deep spiritual and historical connection between the capital’s ancient heritage and its modern development. The award has been presented continuously since 1967 to residents who have made exceptional contributions to the city’s prosperity, as well as the development of its medicine, culture, infrastructure, and social sphere.
This year, the composition of the laureates reflects the diversity and richness of Jerusalem’s society more accurately than ever. The 2026 honor roll includes twelve individuals whose names are now forever etched in the capital’s history. Among them are the legendary sports commentator Moshe Gertel, whose voice has been associated with major sporting events for decades, and the outstanding cardiologist Professor Chaim Lotan, thanks to whom the capital’s medicine has taken significant strides forward. Avraham Barderian, Eliyahu Abud Levi, and Yaakov Efrati received high honors for their immense contributions to the development of urban infrastructure, management, and construction.
The fields of science, healthcare, and social protection are represented no less brightly this year. Awards went to Dr. David Zakut and obstetrician-gynecologist Dr. Nili Yanai, who have dedicated their lives to women’s health, as well as the renowned biochemistry researcher Dr. Miriam Kidron. Lawyer Elias (Daoud) Khoury and Ben Zion (Richard) Hochstein made an enormous contribution to the city’s legal, cultural, and public life. Prominent activists Simcha Siani and Sarah Munderer received special recognition for their years of educational and social work.
In his congratulatory speech, Mayor of Jerusalem Moshe Lion called the honorees the “cornerstones” upon which the Israeli capital rests. The selection of the most worthy candidates was entrusted to a special public committee headed by retired judge David Cheshin. The main evaluation criterion was long-term, selfless work for the benefit of all the city’s communities without exception, going far beyond formal professional duties.
