The “Alumot” Unit: The IDF Bets on Artificial Intelligence

The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) has launched a new technological unit called “Alumot.” It operates under the Communications and Cyber Defense Directorate. The primary mission of the structure is to provide soldiers in combat zones with direct access to artificial intelligence-based tools and rapid data processing technologies.

The team includes IT specialists, data analysts, and military personnel with practical combat experience. The new unit’s work will be structured around continuous contact with the frontline, ensuring that developers can adapt algorithms to the actual needs of the soldiers.

Speaking at the unit’s opening ceremony, Major General Aviad Dagan noted that modern warfare requires an instant response, and technology must constantly adapt to a changing environment. A human being is physically incapable of instantly analyzing the sheer volume of information the army collects today. Algorithms will now take on this task, and the results will provide immediate assistance on the battlefield.

Essentially, the Israeli military is changing its traditional approach to warfare. While complex big data analytics was previously the exclusive domain of headquarters, digital tools will now deliver this information directly to the troops. This will enable commanders to make decisions in a matter of seconds, locate targets faster, and, as a result, more effectively save soldiers’ lives.
