Roman Gofman Officially Becomes the New Head of Israeli Intelligence Agency Mossad

Major General Roman Gofman has officially assumed the position of director of Israel’s national intelligence agency, Mossad. He succeeds David Barnea, who led the legendary organization for the past five years. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu confirmed this appointment following the approval of a special committee, entrusting the new chief with the ambitious goal of permanently neutralizing the Iranian threat to the Jewish state.
Gofman’s appointment breaks the long-standing traditions of the agency. For decades, Mossad directors came from classic intelligence backgrounds, whereas the new chief built an exclusively combat-oriented career in the Israel Defense Forces. Born in Mozyr, Belarus, he rose from a tank crewman to the commander of the 7th Armored Brigade and military secretary to the Prime Minister. His lack of a traditional espionage background is offset by extensive operational experience and personal involvement in complex military campaigns, during which the officer sustained severe wounds.
The inauguration of a Russian-speaking repatriate marks a historic milestone for the Israeli security establishment. Experts view this move not only as a recognition of the officer’s outstanding combat service but also as a major shift in the intelligence agency’s priorities. Under Gofman’s leadership, the organization will focus on aggressively countering Iran’s nuclear program and dismantling the Hamas and Hezbollah networks, setting a new standard for the proactive defense of Israel over the next five years.
