Presentation of Not About War, a Collection of Fiction by Fallen Ukrainian Soldier Maksym Shvartsman, to Be Held in Chernivtsi

A collection of literary works titled Not About War by the late Ukrainian serviceman and journalist Maksym Shvartsman will be presented in Chernivtsi. The event will take place on July 15 at Hub 82 to mark the third anniversary of his death at the front.

On July 15 at 17:00, the Chernivtsi-based center Hub 82 will host the presentation of Maksym Shvartsman’s book “Not About War”. The publication is a collection of literary works comprising short stories, an unfinished sci-fi novella called “Keepers of Continuity,” and frontline letters addressed to his wife, Maryna. The Bukrek publishing house released the book through the efforts of the author’s spouse, who preserved his manuscripts and prepared them for print.

Maksym Shvartsman, a well-known cameraman in Chernivtsi and a member of the local Jewish community, voluntarily joined the territorial defense forces on February 24, 2022. He served in the 92nd Battalion of the 107th Separate Brigade under the call sign “Marvel”. The serviceman carried out combat missions in the Kharkiv direction before being redeployed to the Donetsk region, refusing to leave his unit for a safer position.

The 35-year-old defender lost his life on July 15, 2023, while executing a combat mission near Bakhmut. For his heroism, the state posthumously awarded him the Order “For Courage,” 3rd Class. The book “Not About War” fulfills the author’s lifelong dream of publishing his own prose and serves as a literary memorial to a man who retained his love for art, his hometown, and his family until his final days.
