Nauru Embassy in Jerusalem: Pacific Nation Opens Diplomatic Mission in Israel
Nauru’s embassy in Jerusalem will officially commence operations in the coming months. The government of the Pacific island nation decided to locate its diplomatic mission in the Israeli capital. Nauru will become the tenth country worldwide to move its representation to this city, following a similar step by Colombia.
Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Sa’ar and Nauru Vice President Lionel Aingimea finalized all necessary formalities. The politicians held talks in June 2026 in Fiji. The Israeli minister visited the island nation to attend the inauguration ceremony of his country’s embassy.
The Israeli Ministry of Foreign Affairs committed to providing full assistance to expedite the organizational procedures. During Gideon Sa’ar’s tenure as head of the foreign ministry, this marks the fifth foreign embassy to relocate its operations to Jerusalem. Prior to this, a consul general represented Nauru’s interests in Israel.
The republic, with a population of approximately 12,000 people, officially recognized Jerusalem as the capital of Israel in 2019. The state systematically votes in support of Israel at the UN and previously submitted a written statement to the International Court of Justice in The Hague to back the Israeli legal position. Countries such as the USA, Guatemala, Honduras, Kosovo, Papua New Guinea, Paraguay, Fiji, and Somaliland have already opened their embassies in Jerusalem.
