Author and physician Freida McFadden’s has released an updated edition of her psychological novel about a woman who loses her memory following an attempted murder. The book officially hit shelves on August 18.

Freida McFadden’s thriller “Brain Damage” was officially released by Poisoned Pen Press on August 18, 2026. The paperback edition will be widely available in bookstores starting August 25. The book is a reissue of the original 2016 novel, featuring an updated cover and revisions by the author. Early Goodreads readers have rated the new edition 3.7 out of 5 stars.

The plot centers on Dr. Charlie McKenna, a successful dermatologist who survives a gunshot to the head. She wakes up in a rehabilitation clinic with severe injuries, unable to move or speak normally and unable to remember her own name. She remembers only one thing: someone close to her tried to kill her.

As fragments of her memory slowly return, Charlie begins to question the motives of everyone who visits her in the hospital. She becomes particularly suspicious of a man who regularly visits her room. The situation is further complicated by the fact that Charlie cannot even trust her own mind, which instinctively tries to protect her from a painful truth.

The story’s medical authenticity draws on Freida McFadden’s professional background as a practicing physician specializing in brain injuries. Kirkus Reviews described the novel as a dark tale built around secrets that skillfully misleads the reader, while praising its strong and unexpected ending.
