Passover Birkat Kohanim at the Western Wall to be Held in Limited Format

The ceremony will take place on April 5, 2026 (Sunday, 18 Nisan 5786) with the participation of only 50 Kohanim, selected through pre-registration.

This year, the traditional Birkat Kohanim (Priestly Blessing) ceremony at the Western Wall (Kotel HaMa’aravi) in Jerusalem will take place in a significantly reduced format due to the complex security situation.

According to a joint decision by the Western Wall Heritage Foundation, the Israel Police, and the Jerusalem Municipality, the Western Wall Plaza will be closed to the general public throughout the days of Passover. The thousands of pilgrims who usually fill the plaza will not be able to visit the holy site this year.

The ceremony will take place on April 5, 2026 (Sunday, 18 Nisan 5786) with the participation of only 50 Kohanim, selected through pre-registration. Participation is strictly limited to those who registered first.

Ceremony Schedule:
🕒 08:30 — Morning Prayer (Shacharit)
🕒 09:00 — Priestly Blessing (Shacharit)
🕒 10:00 — Additional Prayer (Musaf)
🕒 10:15 — Priestly Blessing (Musaf)
🕒 10:30 — Prayer for the well-being of IDF soldiers, security forces, and the entire people of Israel

The organizers emphasize that the ceremony will maintain its traditional format but will be conducted with a minimal number of participants. A live broadcast will be available for the public on the Western Wall Heritage Foundation website, as well as on leading news portals and radio stations.

These restrictions have been implemented under the guidance of the Home Front Command amidst the ongoing operation and security threats in Jerusalem. Authorities urge citizens to act responsibly, refrain from attempting to reach the Western Wall, and follow all instructions from security forces.

“And take good heed unto yourselves” (Deuteronomy 4:15).

The tradition of Birkat Kohanim is considered one of the most solemn and moving moments of Passover, typically drawing tens of thousands of people. This year, the focus is on security and mutual responsibility, with the hope that in the near future, it will be possible to return to the customary mass celebrations at the holy site.
