David Kroyanker, a Prominent Jerusalem Architect and Historian, Passes Away

Jerusalem says farewell to David Kroyanker, who dedicated his life to studying and preserving its architecture.

David Kroyanker, an architect and architectural historian, passed away on September 20 at the age of 87. He was one of the most renowned researchers of Jerusalem’s urban landscape and dedicated decades to preserving its architectural heritage.

Kroyanker was born in Jerusalem in 1939. After studying architecture in Israel and the UK, he returned home and worked for many years in the municipality on urban planning projects.

He gained particular fame for his dozens of books on Jerusalem’s architecture—its streets, neighborhoods, and buildings. Thanks to his work, many historical heritage sites were documented and preserved. Kroyanker’s personal archive, which includes thousands of photographs, maps, and drawings, is considered a unique source on the city’s history.

For his work, he was awarded the Teddy Kollek Prize (2006) and the title of “Worthy Citizen of Jerusalem” (2010).

On September 21, David was buried at the cemetery in Ma’ale HaHamisha, near Jerusalem.
May the memory of David be a blessing.
