Israel Expands Eligibility for Firearm Licenses

Israel has expanded the eligibility criteria for obtaining a firearm license, allowing a broader group of former combat soldiers from the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) to apply. Under the new regulations, ex-combat soldiers can now request a personal firearms license regardless of how many years have passed since their military service.

Previously, only those who had served in combat units within the past 20 years were eligible to apply. With the new amendment, that time restriction has been lifted. As a result, tens of thousands of former IDF fighters who were previously ineligible due to the length of time since their discharge can now seek a license, provided they served in operational roles.
This policy change aims to increase access to firearms among citizens with relevant military training. Supporters of the amendment argue that it enhances both personal and public security.
