A Step Toward Peace or a Tactical Pause? Israel and Iran Agree to Ceasefire

After Israel and Iran announced a ceasefire, rockets struck northern Israel. The fragile agreement now faces an early test.

June 24, 2025 — Israel and Iran have reached a preliminary agreement to cease hostilities, effectively ending a 12-day military confrontation marked by rocket attacks, civilian casualties, and the risk of regional escalation. The end of the conflict was announced by former U.S. President Donald Trump, who acted as an informal mediator with support from Qatar and current American officials. According to Trump, the agreement outlines a phased de-escalation: Iran ceases fire first, followed by Israel 12 hours later, with a permanent ceasefire coming into effect 24 hours after that.

Israel officially confirmed its agreement to the plan. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu stated that Israel is prepared to uphold the ceasefire terms, but warned that any further aggression from Iran would be met with an immediate and forceful response. Iran’s Foreign Ministry expressed cautious optimism: Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said no formal document has been signed yet, but Tehran would halt its attacks if Israel stops first.

Nevertheless, the night following the ceasefire announcement was far from calm. Several ballistic missiles were fired at southern Israel, killing at least four people and injuring dozens. Then, on the morning of June 24, additional rockets were launched from Iran toward northern Israel. The IDF confirmed the launches and activated missile defense systems. Residents were instructed to seek immediate shelter and stay there until further notice. In response, Israeli air forces targeted Iranian launch sites identified by intelligence sources.

These developments raised serious concerns among international observers and cast doubt on the durability of the agreement. In his statement, Trump emphasized that diplomacy has provided a chance to prevent a full-scale war in the Middle East. He thanked Qatar for its role in the talks and expressed hope that compliance on both sides could lead to long-term stability. However, experts caution that the fragility of the arrangement requires ongoing international oversight, and the absence of signed commitments leaves room for maneuvering and mutual accusations.

With tensions still high, it remains unclear whether the announced ceasefire marks a genuine turning point in the Israel-Iran relationship or merely a temporary pause before the next round of conflict.
