Israel Police Traffic Cameras: Ben-Gvir Calls for Policy Review

Israel's National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir has criticized recent changes concerning the use of traffic cameras to detect road violations

Israel’s National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir expressed disagreement with the new procedures regarding the use of road photo and video cameras to detect traffic violations. Speaking on the Galey Israel radio station, the minister called the decision a mistake and said he intends to raise the issue at the official level.

According to the minister, the current practice of issuing large numbers of fines for speeding and other traffic violations has not produced the expected results. Ben-Gvir emphasized that the large volume of citations and fines does not lead to a tangible reduction in the number of accidents and road crashes in Israel.

In response, Itamar Ben-Gvir demanded that police leadership provide the full results of its preliminary staff review and the rationale behind the changes. In the near future, the minister plans to hold a working meeting with the Police Commissioner to discuss in detail the effectiveness of the current traffic-enforcement strategy and ways to improve road safety.
