WhatsApp Founder Jan Koum Donates $200 Million to Shaare Zedek Hospital in Jerusalem

A portion of the investment will go towards creating a residential complex for doctors and medical staff directly on the campus grounds.

The Jerusalem-based Shaare Zedek Medical Center has received a record private donation of $200 million from WhatsApp co-founder Jan Koum. This contribution is already being called the largest private donation in the history of the Israeli healthcare system.

The funds will be directed towards a large-scale expansion of the infrastructure of one of Jerusalem’s key medical institutions. As part of the development program, a new multi-story building will be constructed on the hospital grounds, which will significantly increase the number of beds and reduce the burden on the departments. For the capital of Israel, where the population is constantly growing and the medical system operates under high pressure, the project is of strategic importance.

Special attention will be paid to the modernization of the emergency room and urgent care departments. Following the upgrade, the hospital will be able to accommodate more patients simultaneously and expedite the delivery of emergency care. The center’s management notes that the new equipment and technological facilities will meet modern international medical standards.

A portion of the investment will go towards creating a residential complex for doctors and medical staff directly on the campus grounds. For Jerusalem, with its dense urban development and constant traffic congestion, this decision is considered especially important. The ability to live close to the hospital will allow medical professionals to react faster in emergency situations and arrive promptly to patients.

The administration of Shaare Zedek emphasized that the funding will significantly accelerate the implementation of their multi-year modernization program. Projects that were previously planned to be rolled out in stages over decades can now be completed within the coming years.

Jan Koum was born in the Ukrainian city of Fastiv and emigrated to the United States as a teenager. Following the sale of WhatsApp to Meta Platforms, the entrepreneur has been actively involved in philanthropic initiatives, including the support of medical and educational projects.
