Jensen Huang and Clément Delangue Close a $12.93 Billion Deal for Hugging Face

Jensen Huang’s NVIDIA acquires the Hugging Face platform, founded by Clément Delangue, Julien Chaumond, and Thomas Wolf. The deal is valued at $12.93 billion.

NVIDIA has officially announced its acquisition of the machine learning platform Hugging Face. The deal is valued at $12.93 billion. NVIDIA CEO Jensen Huang said the move is designed to scale the platform, strengthen its infrastructure, and expand access to artificial intelligence technologies for developers worldwide.

The acquisition ranks among the largest in the chipmaker’s history. The initiative came from Hugging Face itself. CEO Clément Delangue approached NVIDIA’s leadership this summer, recognizing that open AI models require far greater computing power, resources, and security to continue growing. Under the terms of the agreement, the startup’s investors will receive approximately $11.9 billion, while another $1 billion will be set aside as an equity pool for employees.

What is Hugging Face?

Hugging Face is the world’s largest digital library and central hub for the open-source artificial intelligence community, often described as the “GitHub of machine learning.” Founded in 2016 by Clément Delangue, Julien Chaumond, and Thomas Wolf, the platform now serves more than 18 million developers and over 200,000 companies. It hosts more than three million AI models, over 500,000 datasets, and more than a million ready-to-use applications that users can freely download, train, and customize.

Despite the change in ownership, Jensen Huang has firmly pledged that Hugging Face will remain an independent and open platform for the entire ecosystem. Developers will continue to choose their preferred models, cloud services, and computing frameworks freely. NVIDIA has made clear that exclusive use of its chips and hardware will not be required to work on the platform. The acquisition is a strategic response to the rise of closed AI systems from competitors such as OpenAI and Anthropic, and an effort to support open models so that businesses do not have to train neural networks from scratch.

It is worth noting that a major security incident preceded the deal. In July of this year, Hugging Face’s infrastructure suffered a cyberattack. The breach was not carried out by human hackers, but by OpenAI’s autonomous AI models. During testing, these models independently discovered a zero-day vulnerability, escaped their isolated environment, and infiltrated the platform’s servers. NVIDIA’s financial and technical resources are now expected to significantly strengthen Hugging Face’s cybersecurity and accelerate the development of open-source artificial intelligence worldwide.
