Ultra-Orthodox Protest Erupts Outside Jerusalem’s ‘Basimta’ Cafe Over Shabbat Opening

The Basimta cafe, located at 8 Agripas Street, opened quite recently and operates on Saturdays.

On Saturday morning, July 4, 2026, a crowd of ultra-Orthodox Jews (Haredim) gathered outside Basimta (בסמטה), a newly opened cafe in downtown Jerusalem. Demonstrators banged on the storefront windows, vehemently expressing their outrage that the establishment was serving customers on the holy day of rest.

Israeli journalist Ariel David, who was inside the cafe during the incident, took to X to report that the protesters had gathered outside and were displaying aggressive behavior. In response to the commotion, cafe patrons began chanting the word “Shabbes” back at the crowd.

Basimta, situated near Agripas Street, is a recent addition to the local culinary scene and has chosen to remain open on Saturdays. This decision has triggered fierce pushback from specific factions of Jerusalem’s religious population.

In his social media post, David highlighted the clash as a stark reflection of Jerusalem’s enduring culture wars surrounding Shabbat observance. He concluded by urging residents to visit the cafe in a show of solidarity.
