Jerusalem: Damage from Protests Against the Construction of the Green Line Light Rail Exceeds 600 Million Shekels

Jerusalem construction firms report significant financial losses as radical ultra-Orthodox groups continue to target light rail infrastructure projects with frequent protest actions.

The construction of the Green Line for the Jerusalem Light Rail faces recurring disruptions due to actions by radical demonstrators. In early July 2026, a group of activists breached a construction site in the Bar-Ilan neighborhood, damaging machinery and onsite infrastructure. Contractors indicate that the total economic damage resulting from these repeated incidents has now reached 600 million shekels.

Protesters oppose the light rail route passing through their neighborhoods, claiming the project disrupts their community’s way of life. These confrontations and acts of vandalism cause direct property damage and result in months of project delays, significantly increasing the state’s budget requirements to complete the necessary transport infrastructure.

The Ministry of Finance and the Ministry of Transport have repeatedly addressed the need for additional funding to cover these losses. The state maintains a firm position that developing the citywide rail network remains essential for all residents, while law enforcement authorities continue investigations into the perpetrators to mitigate further damage to public infrastructure projects.
