Preparations have begun in Jerusalem for one of the largest religious events of the year. Security forces, the Ministry of Religious Services, and the Cemeteries Council are coordinating actions ahead of the influx of tens of thousands of pilgrims.
What event is being prepared in Jerusalem?
Jerusalem is preparing for the annual Hillula (anniversary of passing) of the prominent rabbi and kabbalist Chaim ben Attar, who is buried on the Mount of Olives. On this day, tens of thousands of believers from all over the world traditionally come to his grave to pray, light candles, and ask for blessings.
Who was Rabbi Chaim ben Attar?
Rabbi Chaim ben Attar (1696–1743) was one of the most revered Sephardic sages and mystics of the 18th century. Born in Morocco, he spent the final years of his life in Jerusalem. To most believers, he is known as the “Ohr ha-Chaim” (“Light of Life”), which is the title of his main work.
Why is the book “Ohr ha-Chaim” so popular?
The book “Ohr ha-Chaim” is a profound philosophical and mystical commentary on the Pentateuch (Torah). It is unique in that it became a classic for the entire Jewish world. The book is equally highly valued by both Sephardic communities and Ashkenazi Hasidim, many of whom believe that this work was written under the influence of prophetic inspiration.
When and where exactly will the commemoration take place?
The Hillula is observed on the 15th day of the Hebrew month of Tammuz (June 29-30, 2026). The main pilgrimage site will be the Mount of Olives (Har HaZeitim) in Jerusalem, home to the ancient cemetery and the righteous man’s grave.
How are city authorities preparing for the influx of pilgrims?
Due to the expected arrival of tens of thousands of people, a special coordination meeting was held at the “Shalem” police station in East Jerusalem. The meeting was attended by Zuriel Krispal, Director General of the Cemeteries Council, and Yaakov Cohen, Deputy Head of the Ministry of Religious Services. Together with the police, the agencies are developing a logistics plan, road closures, and security measures to ensure the pilgrimage runs smoothly and without incident.
