Renowned Jerusalem Photographer Mikhail Levit Passes Away

Mikhail Levit, one of Jerusalem’s most prominent photographers whose work shaped the visual identity of the Israeli capital for decades, has passed away at the age of 81.
Mikhail Levit was born in 1944 in Cherkasy. During the Soviet era, he worked as a photojournalist, participated in international exhibitions, and won numerous prestigious awards. His work was characterized by a meticulous attention to detail, a profound understanding of composition, and a keen sensitivity to human character.
Following his repatriation to Israel, Levit dedicated himself to Jerusalem. His photographs of the Old City, its narrow alleyways, religious landmarks, and the daily lives of its residents became iconic, largely defining the visual image of modern Jerusalem. The photographer captured more than just architectural landscapes; he created soulful portraits of the city’s inhabitants, reflecting its multifaceted nature and cultural diversity.
