“Quiet Cities” Program in Jerusalem: Acoustic Cameras to Fine Noisy Vehicles

Israel’s Ministry of Environmental Protection will allocate a grant of approximately 1 million shekels to Jerusalem as part of the national “Quiet Cities” program, aimed at reducing noise pollution.
Special acoustic sensors and cameras capable of automatically identifying disturbances to public peace will be installed throughout Jerusalem. The system will detect vehicles with unjustifiably loud engines, modified exhaust systems, as well as drivers who excessively use their car horns.
A key feature of the project is the ability to issue fines remotely: data collected by the detectors will serve as evidentiary material for the automatic issuance of citations, without the involvement of police officers.
Earlier, similar grants totaling 750,000 shekels were awarded to Kiryat Ono and Kfar Saba. The increased subsidy for Jerusalem is due to the city’s size and the complexity of its transportation infrastructure.
