Innovations in Jerusalem: 100 Bomb Shelters Equipped with Auto-Unlock Systems and Wi-Fi

Jerusalem has upgraded its civil defense infrastructure: the city municipality, in partnership with Mifal HaPayis, has equipped approximately 100 public bomb shelters with an automatic opening system. Around 5 million shekels were allocated for the development and implementation of this remote management technology. The doors will now unlock immediately following a siren—the system is directly linked to Home Front Command (Pikud HaOref) radar, ensuring access without the need for human intervention.
One of the key issues with older bomb shelters has always been the lack of communication, as thick concrete walls block cellular signals. As part of the modernization, Wi-Fi routers have been installed in each of the 100 facilities.
Prior to the implementation of this automation, many municipal shelters had to be left open 24/7, which often led to unsanitary conditions or misuse of the space. The new system solves this problem: during routine times, the premises remain securely locked. This guarantees the safety of the equipment, cleanliness, and 100% readiness of the facility to receive residents at any moment.
