Magnus Carlsen Retains Esports World Cup Chess Title in Paris

Magnus Carlsen has successfully defended his Esports World Cup chess title, defeating 19-year-old Belarusian grandmaster Denis Lazavik in the final in Paris on Saturday, August 15.
The 35-year-old Norwegian won both sets of the championship match by a score of 3–1, securing a 2–0 victory in the best-of-three-set final. The result gave Carlsen his second consecutive EWC chess championship after his triumph in the inaugural edition of the tournament in 2025.
Carlsen completed the entire Paris tournament without losing a single game. His run included victories over Nihal Sarin and Alireza Firouzja in the knockout stage before he faced Lazavik in the final. Carlsen defeated Firouzja 4–1 in the semifinals, while Lazavik reached the final after eliminating Nodirbek Abdusattorov and Hikaru Nakamura.
The EWC chess competition featured rapid games played with a 10-minute time control and no increment. The championship was held in Paris from August 11 to 15 as part of the 2026 Esports World Cup.
Carlsen’s victory earned him $250,000, while runner-up Lazavik received $190,000. The Norwegian represented Team Liquid at the tournament.
Carlsen’s victory also strengthens his position as the defining player in the short history of chess at the Esports World Cup. After winning the inaugural chess competition in 2025, he returned in Paris to defend his crown and once again finished the event undefeated.
For Lazavik, the runner-up finish represents another major breakthrough. The 19-year-old Belarusian grandmaster defeated several elite opponents on his way to the final, including Abdusattorov and Nakamura, before facing the defending champion.
With his second consecutive EWC title secured, Carlsen leaves Paris with another major championship and an unblemished tournament record.
