OpenAI Shuts Down Sora: The End of an Ambitious Project

As a reminder, Sora is a neural network that allowed users to create videos from text descriptions. The platform existed as a standalone application for only about six months (though the initial announcements came earlier).

Officially, the project was deemed “unmarketable” (despite billions in investment), while the real reason is cited as the colossal cost of computing power. Previously, OpenAI even planned to create a TikTok competitor based on Sora, but the company’s strategy has shifted sharply toward robotics and enterprise services
