Spain Investigates Widespread Power Outage — Cyberattack Suspected

On April 28, 2025, a massive power outage struck central and eastern regions of Spain, affecting cities including Madrid, Valencia, and parts of Catalonia.

The disruption lasted for several hours, paralyzing rail services, forcing hospitals to switch to backup power, and halting industrial operations in several areas.
Spanish authorities have not yet disclosed the official cause of the incident. However, possible explanations under investigation include a large-scale technical failure or an external cyberattack. The National Commission on Markets and Competition (CNMC), in coordination with the Ministry of the Interior, is conducting a thorough investigation.
European media outlets such as Euronews, El País, Politico Europe, and Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung have reported on the incident, calling it the most serious energy-related emergency in Spain in the past decade. Government officials have assured that the public will receive a full report once the investigation is complete.
