US and Iran Exchange Strikes in the Strait of Hormuz
On the night of May 27-28, 2026, the United States and Iran exchanged military strikes in the Strait of Hormuz area. This is the second armed clash in recent days, occurring despite a ceasefire regime formally in effect since April.
According to the US Central Command (CENTCOM), American forces intercepted and destroyed four Iranian attack drones. It is reported that the devices posed a direct threat to military and civilian vessels in the strait’s waters. Following this, the US armed forces carried out a targeted strike on ground infrastructure near the Iranian city of Bandar Abbas. The target was a drone control station, where personnel, according to US intelligence, were preparing to launch a fifth drone.
The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) responded with an attack on US military infrastructure. The target was an airbase from which, according to statements by the Iranian side, strikes on Iranian territory were coordinated. According to preliminary information, the attacked facility is located in Kuwait. Iranian representatives officially called the actions of the United States a violation of the ceasefire terms.
The new escalation is taking place against the backdrop of attempts to conclude a long-term peace agreement. The main topic of the current negotiations remains the resumption of safe commercial shipping through the Strait of Hormuz, which is a key artery for the global energy market.
At the moment, the conflict has not escalated into a full-scale military phase, however, both sides publicly accuse each other of undermining the agreements and negotiating in bad faith. Tensions in the region remain high, which could have a direct impact on global oil prices in the coming days.
