Uwe Boll’s ‘Citizen Vigilante’ Denied Theatrical Rating in Germany

The trade press has met the picture with intense hostility, accusing the director of inciting social discord.

Controversial director Uwe Boll’s new film, *Citizen Vigilante*, has effectively been banned in Germany. The German motion picture rating system, FSK, refused to grant the picture an age rating, rendering a wide theatrical release impossible and virtually eliminating its chances of distribution on legal streaming platforms within the country. While the official justification cites the “promotion of vigilantism,” Boll himself has slammed the decision as an act of outright political censorship aimed at stifling a conversation the government deems inconvenient.

The plot centers on a man driven to desperation by street crime, which the film attributes to immigrant gangs. The screenplay draws inspiration from true events, including a high-profile gang rape case in Hamburg where the majority of the perpetrators received merely suspended sentences. The protagonist takes the law into his own hands, transforming into a vigilante. The director has been vocal in stating that the film reflects the grim realities of contemporary German society. In his view, unchecked migration has severely undermined public safety, while the judicial system has proven too lenient on offenders.

In response to the regulator’s actions, Boll pointed to what he sees as glaring double standards within the German system. He argues that the level of violence in *Citizen Vigilante* is significantly lower than in many Hollywood action blockbusters that secure wide releases without facing such hurdles. Boll explicitly claims that had the film depicted neo-Nazis committing crimes against migrants, it would have easily received government approval. Instead, he argues, his movie was banned precisely because it contradicts the official political narrative and breaches the taboo on criticizing migration policy.

The trade press has met the picture with intense hostility, accusing the director of inciting social discord. *Variety* panned the work as “astoundingly bad,” labeling the protagonist as “xenophobic and self-righteous.” Entertainment portal *Hollywood Elsewhere* described the film as a “furious anti-migrant parable.” Nevertheless, despite the scathing reviews and the authorities’ attempts to restrict its distribution, the film has resonated strongly with general audiences, who see it as a reflection of pressing real-world issues. Elon Musk played a significant role in this groundswell by publicly endorsing the film and facilitating its distribution on X, allowing the feature to reach millions of viewers in defiance of the official ban.
