Vassily Ivanchuk Returns to World Top 100 After Triumph at Menorca Open 2025

Vassily Ivanchuk wins Menorca Open 2025 and returns to the FIDE Top 100 after years of absence. The chess icon also earned podiums in Reykjavik and Semana Santa.

Chess legend Vassily Ivanchuk has made a remarkable comeback by winning the Menorca Open 2025 with a dominant score of 8 out of 9. This outstanding performance has propelled the 56-year-old Ukrainian grandmaster back into the FIDE Top 100 — his first appearance in the elite list in several years.

Ivanchuk secured 7 wins and 2 draws, achieving a tournament performance rating of 2833 Elo. In April alone, he competed in three international tournaments, playing 27 games in just 19 days and gaining a total of 40 FIDE rating points.

In addition to his victory in Menorca, Ivanchuk placed second at the Reykjavik Open and third at the Semana Santa Open. As a result, he currently ranks 4th in the 2025 FIDE Circuit standings and remains a strong contender for the 2026 Candidates Tournament.

His return to form is being hailed as one of the most compelling and inspiring stories in the chess world this year.
