Hungarian Prime Minister Nominates Chess Grandmaster Judit Polgár for Presidency
Hungarian Prime Minister Péter Magyar plans to nominate renowned chess grandmaster Judit Polgár for the country’s presidency, he announced Sunday on Facebook. The premier emphasized that Polgár’s formidable international standing perfectly aligns with the diplomatic and representational duties of the office.
In Hungary, the presidency is a largely ceremonial role devoid of broad executive powers, functioning primarily to unify the nation and represent it on the global stage. Proponents of her nomination argue that Polgár’s global recognition and impeccable reputation make her ideally suited for these responsibilities.
Widely regarded as the greatest female chess player of all time, Polgár remains the only woman to have cracked the top 10 of the World Chess Federation’s absolute rankings. At just 15, she shattered Bobby Fischer’s record to become the youngest grandmaster in history. Over her illustrious career, she has defeated multiple reigning world champions, including Garry Kasparov and Magnus Carlsen.
Polgár has yet to publicly comment on the prospective nomination. She is scheduled to meet with Prime Minister Magyar on Monday, July 20, to discuss whether she will accept the political post.
