Baniya Barbie Loses Lawsuit to Or Marmelstein: Singer to Pay Over 5.3 Million NIS for Breach of Contract

Israeli singer-songwriter Baniya Barbie has lost a multi-year legal battle against his former producer and personal manager, Or Marmelstein. According to a recently issued arbitration ruling, the prominent artist has been ordered to pay an unprecedented compensation package exceeding 5.3 million NIS (New Israeli Shekels) for breach of contract.
The long-standing dispute between the artist and his management dates back to March 2022, when Barbie unilaterally terminated a three-year exclusive contract. At the time, the singer accused his impresario of financial misconduct, artificially inflating concert fees, and mismanaging his career. However, following a rigorous arbitration process spanning nearly four years, independent forensic auditors completely debunked the musician’s allegations. The presiding arbitrator, Dr. Alon Kaplan, concluded that Barbie had not only terminated the agreement without legal grounds but had also deliberately sabotaged their professional partnership prior to officially severing ties.
The final judgment totals exactly 5,328,080 NIS. This staggering figure—highly unusual for the local music industry—comprises 3.47 million NIS in direct damages from the lost contract, accrued interest, and 950,000 NIS in legal and attorney fees. In a minor counter-ruling, the arbitration tribunal ordered Marmelstein to return approximately 80,000 NIS to the artist due to minor, historical accounting discrepancies, though this had no bearing on the overall definitive victory for the manager.
Commenting on the conclusion of the protracted legal warfare, Or Marmelstein expressed deep satisfaction with the outcome, stating that justice had finally prevailed. He emphasized that he had never sought more than what was rightfully owed to him for years of dedicated work and substantial financial investments in launching the artist’s career.
Barbie, meanwhile, took a philosophical approach to the severe financial blow, quoting the Song of Songs in his response to local reporters. He stated that despite the colossal financial losses, he now feels “mentally liberated and cleansed,” and intends to fully refocus his energy on his artistry, recording new material, and launching a major summer tour.
