Givat Ze’ev to Receive City Status: Israeli Interior Ministry Decision
The Israeli Ministry of Interior has launched the procedure to change the municipal status of the Givat Ze’ev settlement. In the near future, the locality may officially become a city.This initiative has already received the approval of the Ministry’s Director General, Israel Ozen.
Today, Givat Ze’ev, located northwest of Jerusalem, is home to approximately 25,000 residents. The settlement consistently demonstrates one of the highest population growth rates in the country. Specialists led by Gabriel Maimon conducted a comprehensive assessment and concluded that the locality has essentially already acquired an urban character. During the review, they analyzed in detail demographic trends, the management resources of the local council, the quality of services provided, and future development plans. The committee’s conclusion confirms that the status upgrade is a necessary measure that fully meets the current needs of the community.
The new status will provide local authorities with more specialized tools for the development of the territory. This will allow them to more effectively adapt the administrative apparatus to the needs of a rapidly growing population, improve the quality of services, and properly allocate the budget amidst active construction. The Director General of the Interior Ministry called this decision an important step in strengthening Givat Ze’ev’s position. The head of the current local council, Yossi Asraf, also welcomed the initiative, noting the significance of this stage for the development of the locality. For Givat Ze’ev to officially become a city, the document must pass the final approval stage — completing the procedure requires the signature of the head of the IDF Central Command, Avi Bluth.
The Givat Ze’ev settlement was founded in 1977 and received local council status in 1983. The current decision by the relevant ministry is the logical outcome of the locality’s years-long transformation into a large and modern suburb.
