YouTube Monetization 2027: Platform Doubles Requirements for New Channels

Starting in February 2027, the video platform will tighten the rules for joining its Partner Program. New creators will need to accumulate twice as many hours of long-form video watch time or Shorts views to earn revenue from ads and YouTube Premium.

YouTube’s monetization requirements for new creators will change on February 1, 2027. The platform will double the requirements for joining the YouTube Partner Program (YPP). Creators will need 1,000 subscribers and either 8,000 hours of public video watch time over the past 365 days or 20 million Shorts views over 90 days. The current thresholds are 4,000 hours or 10 million Shorts views, respectively.

The changes will apply only to new channels. Creators already participating in YPP will retain their status. Requirements for early monetization through Fan Funding and Shopping will remain unchanged.

For creators already enrolled in YPP, a separate Shorts-related requirement will apply: to earn advertising and YouTube Premium revenue specifically from Shorts, they will need to maintain at least 10 million Shorts views over the previous 90 days. If the figure falls below that threshold, Shorts-related payments will be temporarily suspended, but creators will retain their YPP status and the ability to earn revenue from long-form videos.

The company attributes the rule changes to the platform’s continued growth, with more than 200 billion Shorts views recorded daily and over 1 billion hours of content watched on TVs. YouTube also plans to increase total creator payouts in 2027 compared with 2026.
